The machine this web server was/is hosted on is my private pc, and I only set up the web server for testing purposes. I just wanted to learn how this stuff roughly works, because I imagine this could come in handy sooner or later. So I went ahead and installed WAMP and set up a WordPress blog on it. I let Dyndns route to my static cable modem IP and continued to gradually expanding the project. Now I also host files for university and my kolleg-courses here and use it as a gallery for my photos and screenshots.
So the machine was running on Windows 2000 for about 3 years or so until a few days ago (early February 2008). But since the machine was also used to develop programs, watch TV and play games, the system started to slow down, even though I knew how I could keep it in bearable boundaries. Also, certain programs and games refused to work (some of them were executable with some registry-, reverser engineering- or other little tricks) and support for Win 2000 was dropped some when last year. Setting up Windows XP was the logical solution. Although there were some obstacles, I had to overcome.
Long story short: I backed up all vital data, except for the web server database tables. MySQL is storing them somewhere hidden on the system partition, so I didn’t find them, even though I searched for *SQL*, *tables* and other related strings. You can imagine my disappointment when I discovered that all my posts and my links vanished in the process of formatting the … wait, I didn’t even format the system partition … shit, I might be able to still recover my tables …
